The Valley of Flowers is a UNESCO World Heritage national park known for its alpine meadows that burst into a dense carpet of wildflowers each monsoon. It sits just off the road to Badrinath, making it a natural addition for travellers already heading that way.

How to get there

The trek begins at Govindghat, which sits directly on the Rishikesh- Badrinath road, roughly 275 km from Rishikesh. From Govindghat, it’s about 13-14 km to the small settlement of Ghangaria, on foot or by pony/mule, which serves as the overnight base. From Ghangaria, the Valley of Flowers entrance is a further 3.5-4 km.

Permits and park rules

Since it’s a protected national park, an entry permit is required, obtainable at the checkpoint near Ghangaria along with a small daily fee. Overnight stays inside the valley itself are not permitted — visitors trek in for the day from Ghangaria and return before dark.

Best time to visit

The park is open roughly June to October. The wildflower bloom is generally most spectacular in late July and August, though this coincides with the monsoon, so expect rain and slippery sections of trail during that peak bloom window.

Difficulty

The Govindghat-to-Ghangaria stretch is a moderate, well-trodden trail; the final push into the valley is shorter but steeper in places. Most reasonably fit trekkers manage the full round trip comfortably over 2-3 days including a rest day in Ghangaria.

Combining with Badrinath

Because Govindghat sits directly on the Badrinath route, this is one of the easiest detours to add to a Char Dham itinerary — either on the way up or the way back down, typically adding 2-3 days to the overall trip.
