Rishikesh sits where the Ganga leaves the Himalayan foothills and enters the plains — part pilgrimage town, part yoga capital, part adventure sports hub. It’s compact enough to explore on foot in places, and it’s the natural starting point for most Char Dham journeys.

Getting there

Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the nearest airport, about 20 km away. Rishikesh Railway Station and nearby Haridwar are the nearest railheads, both well connected to Delhi and other major cities. By road, Rishikesh is about 230 km from Delhi, roughly a 5.5-6.5 hour drive.

Where to stay

  • Tapovan / Laxman Jhula — cafés, yoga studios and a backpacker-friendly feel
  • Ram Jhula / Muni Ki Reti — closer to the main ashrams and evening Ganga Aarti
  • Haridwar Road / Downtown — more practical for early departures toward Char Dham

What the town is actually like

Rishikesh is walkable in its older core around the two suspension bridges — Ram Jhula and Laxman Jhula — but spread out further along the riverbank toward Tapovan and Shivpuri, where most of the rafting camps and adventure operators are based. Expect a mix of temples and ashrams, riverside cafés, and a steady flow of both pilgrims and adventure travellers.

How much time to allow

A single day covers the essentials — see our 1-day itinerary. Two days allows a proper adventure activity alongside the sightseeing (our 2-day itinerary), and three days leaves room for a slower pace with a yoga session or wellness morning added in (our 3-day itinerary).
