The Char Dham Yatra runs on a fixed seasonal window — the shrines close completely for winter, since snow makes the high routes impassable. Within the open season, though, the month you pick changes the experience quite a bit.

May - June: peak season

This is when most pilgrims travel, right after the summer school holidays begin. Weather is generally stable and mild at altitude, but expect the largest crowds, the highest demand for ponies and accommodation, and the need to book well ahead.

July - August: monsoon

Monsoon rain brings a real risk of landslides and road closures on the mountain sections, particularly on the Kedarnath and Badrinath routes. Many travellers — and many operators — avoid this window. If you must travel then, build extra buffer days into your plan.

September - October: the quieter peak

Once the monsoon clears, this window often has the most reliably clear mountain views and noticeably thinner crowds than May-June, while temperatures are still comfortable. Many repeat travellers consider this the best overall balance.

Late October - closing

As the season winds down toward the closing dates, nights get significantly colder, especially at Kedarnath and Badrinath, and an early snowfall can occasionally bring an early closure. It’s a good window for those who prioritise low crowds over comfort.

Our take

For most first-time travellers, we recommend early June or the September-October window. Tell us your available dates and we’ll flag anything specific to that period — festival crowds, expected weather, or road conditions we’re currently seeing.
