Known as the “Queen of the Hills”, Mussoorie is one of Uttarakhand’s oldest and most popular hill stations, sitting at around 2,000 m above sea level with views over the Doon Valley and, on clear days, the snow-capped Himalayan range beyond.
Getting there from Rishikesh
Mussoorie is about 80 km from Rishikesh, typically a 3-3.5 hour drive via Dehradun. The road climbs steadily after Dehradun, with the temperature noticeably dropping as you gain altitude.
What to see
- Mall Road — the town’s pedestrian spine, lined with shops, cafés and colonial-era buildings
- Gun Hill — reachable by cable car, with panoramic views over the valley and mountains
- Kempty Falls — a popular waterfall a short drive out of town, busiest on weekends
- Camel’s Back Road — a quieter walking route with good sunset views, less crowded than Mall Road
Best time to visit
March-June brings warm days and cool evenings with generally clear views; September-November follows the monsoon with similarly good conditions. Winter (December-January) occasionally brings snow, drawing a different set of visitors, though roads can be slower in that window.
How much time to allow
A day trip is possible but rushed — an overnight stay lets you actually enjoy Mall Road in the evening and fit in Kempty Falls or Gun Hill without racing the clock. Many travellers combine Mussoorie with a Dehradun stop given how close the two are.
