Haridwar
Rishikesh vs Haridwar
Same river, 25 km apart, very different towns — which one to base yourself in, and why many travellers end up doing both.

- Distance apart
- ~25 km
- Rishikesh known for
- Yoga, adventure sports
- Haridwar known for
- Har Ki Pauri, temples
- Common choice
- Base in one, day-trip the other
Rishikesh and Haridwar sit on the same stretch of the Ganga, just 25 km apart, and are often mentioned in the same breath — but they’re quite different in character, and the right base depends on what you’re there for.
Choose Rishikesh if…
- You want yoga, meditation or a wellness retreat — Rishikesh is internationally known for this
- You plan to do adventure activities like rafting, trekking, camping or bungee jumping
- You prefer a more laid-back, café-and-ghat atmosphere
- You’re starting or ending a Char Dham Yatra, since Rishikesh sits at the mouth of all four routes
Choose Haridwar if…
- You want the larger, more traditional Ganga Aarti experience at Har Ki Pauri
- You’re arriving by train and want to minimise onward travel
- You prefer a more classically pilgrimage-focused town over a backpacker/wellness scene
- You want easy access to Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi, the hilltop temples reached by cable car
Why many travellers do both
Given how close they are, plenty of visitors don’t choose one over the other — they base themselves in Rishikesh for a few days and take a half-day trip into Haridwar for Har Ki Pauri and the Aarti, or the reverse if arriving by train into Haridwar first.
Our recommendation
For most leisure travellers, Rishikesh makes the more versatile base — it has more to do day to day, and Haridwar is an easy half-day add-on from there. If your trip is purely pilgrimage-focused with limited time, Haridwar alone can also work well.
