The Uttarakhand government requires every Char Dham pilgrim to register before travelling to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath or Badrinath. It’s a straightforward process, but skipping it can genuinely stop your trip at a checkpoint, so it’s worth doing before you leave rather than treating it as a formality.
How to register online
Registration is done through the official state portal at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in. You’ll create an account, enter each traveller’s details and ID proof, select which shrines you plan to visit and your travel dates, and receive a registration confirmation with a reference number or QR code to carry with you.
Registering offline
If you’d rather not do it online, registration counters operate in Haridwar and Rishikesh where you can complete the process in person. This works fine outside peak season, but expect queues during May-June when pilgrim numbers are highest.
What you’ll need
- A valid government photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, driving licence or similar) for every traveller
- Basic contact details and a mobile number for confirmation
- Your planned travel dates and which shrines you intend to visit
Where checkpoints matter
Registration is checked at points along each route — typically near the base towns before the final approach to each shrine. Carrying a printed or downloaded copy of your confirmation, alongside physical ID, avoids delays here.
